This year, the Ida Ballard Memorial Scholarship Foundation awarded its first 4-year scholarship to Brittney Clark of Memphis’ Frayser High School. The scholarship announcement was the highlight of the 2011 Golf Tournament Fundraiser held at
the Wedgewood Golfers’ Course in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Miss Clark will be attending Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri this fall as an Education major. From this year’s proceeds, the 2011 Ida Ballard Simon Golf Tournament will increase its endowed scholarship account with Lincoln University by $7 thousand.
Tournament organizers were blessed once again. Memphis and surrounding areas experienced a week of torrential rainfall, high winds, downed trees and power lines
and the beginning of what would prove to be record flooding. However, the sun shone brightly on Saturday and the golfers teed off on schedule – 8 a.m., April 30.
While the golfers where out, organizers prepared for the luncheon and award ceremony underneath the club’s large, shaded pavilion. This year, the golfers were served country fried catfish with creamy, southern-style cole slaw, fries and plenty of
hot sauce.
After 18 holes of play, teams began to return from the course. The first team returned some time close to 1 o’clock. Before sitting down for lunch, golfers selected items from the gift table. Then, raffle winners were announced with the big prize
going to Chris Sparks who kissed the announcer, 6 year-old Earolyn Landers, upon receiving his Odyssey putter. The 2011
Ida Ballard Simon Golf Tournament Championship trophy was awarded to the Woodruff Team with a winning score of 58.
Saving the best for last, organizers announced the winner of the 2011 Scholarship award. Brittney Clark was handed a
token wooden golf cart that sported an engraved plaque which read “Full Ride” to represent the full 4-year scholarship
she received. The crowd cheered as Brittney clutched the little wooden golf cart, holding back tears and smiling wide. She thanked the scholarship foundation and everyone present. “I’m so happy,” Brittney said as she wiped her eyes. Her display
of unadulterated joy also jerked a few tears from the watching eyes attending the ceremony.
The tournament honors the late Ida Ballard Simon, former graduate and Vice President for Advancement at Lincoln University – the oldest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) west of the Mississippi and the only institution in America founded by African American Civil War veterans.
