2010 marks another successful fundraising event for the Ida Ballard Simon
Golf Tournament. The tournament, held at the Riverside King Golf Course
in Memphis, TN, raised over $10,000.00 for its scholarship endowment
fund. This year’s event, originally scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 24th
was rescheduled to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 25th due to stormy weather
conditions in Memphis.
Luckily, the rain stopped and the sun came out to welcome teams to a
beautiful Sunday morning for 18 holes of golf.
Around noon, teams began signing in and enjoying light refreshments
while friends and well wishers mingled and purchased raffle tickets. Golfers teed off around 1:20 while organizers, volunteers and friends moved to the clubhouse deck to enjoy the music, beverages and some highly competitive card games.
Event planners began to notice dark clouds moving in around 4:15 and moved from the deck and took cover under the breezeway just in time to avoid the next round of weekend rain.
Teams finished their rounds and returned to the clubhouse around 5:00 p.m. for the awards ceremony. In addition to the trophies, golfers walked away with gifts and raffle prizes.
The tournament honors the late Ida Ballard Simon, former graduate and Vice President for Advancement at Lincoln University – a historically black college. Proceeds from the tournament will be utilized to 1) endow the scholarship account with Lincoln University Foundation and enable the 1st full scholarship to be awarded to a 2011 graduating senior from a Memphis Public School interested in attending Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri (Ida’s undergraduate college alma mater), and 2) a $500.00 Book Scholarship will be awarded to a 2010 Memphis Public School City graduating senior who has enrolled or been accepted by a Trade School or Historically Black College
or University. Interested parties can go to www.ballardfamilysite.org to learn more about the fund or make a donation.Golf Tournament Results (4 person scramble):
